What should I do in a dental emergency?

If you experience an injury to your mouth at work or play, stay calm and act quickly. Visiting the dentist within 30 minutes of an accident could mean the difference between saving and losing your permanent tooth.

For example, if you knock out one of your permanent teeth, pick it up right away, but avoid touching the nerves or roots. Next, try placing the tooth back in its socket; if it doesn’t stay in place, put your tooth in a glass of milk or tuck it into your cheek, just be careful not to swallow it. Then, call Dr. Householder right away.

For dental emergencies that occur outside of normal office hours, call 911 or visit your nearest emergency room.

What are some common dental emergencies?

A dental emergency is any oral health problem or injury that causes swelling, bleeding, or severe pain. Dr. Householder regularly treats:

• Cracked and chipped teeth
• Knocked-out teeth
• Gum abscesses
• Lodged foreign objects
• Puncture wounds

Emergency dentists also treat more complex problems like jaw fractures and severe infections. Toothaches, swollen tongues, and irritated gums also fall under the purview of emergency dentistry.

How are dental emergencies treated?

The treatment for dental emergencies depends on the cause of your discomfort and the severity of your symptoms. 

Restoration

Whenever possible, Dr. Householder works to preserve your natural, permanent teeth. For example, if you crack or chip a tooth, he may recommend a dental crown to preserve your smile. More serious damage could require surgical intervention via a root canal. Prior to any restoration, Dr. Householder uses the CEREC system to take digital optical impressions of your teeth and gums.

Extraction

Saving your permanent teeth isn’t always possible. If there’s no way to prevent further infection or pain, Dr. Householder and the team may recommend an extraction. Dr. Householder offers wisdom tooth extractions, extractions for soft tissue impactions, and partial bony extractions. 

How can I prevent a dental emergency?

There’s no way to prevent dental emergencies entirely, but there are steps you can take to significantly lower your risk.
